Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University (LNMU) is one of the oldest and biggest medical educational institutions in Ukraine. It is one of the leading medical universities of the IV level of accreditation. LNMU begins from the Medical Faculty of Lviv University, which was opened on November 16, 1784, according to the privilege of the Austrian emperor Josef II. In 2009 University celebrated its 225 anniversary.
22 scientific schools actively function and develop in University: of obstetrics and gynecology, biochemical, hygienic, of infectious diseases, of history of medicine and pharmacy, microbiological, morphological, of neurology and neurosurgery, of oncology, of otorhynolaryngology, ophthalmological, of pathological anatomy and pathological physiology, pediatric, psychiatric, of dentistry, of internal diseases, pharmacological, physiological, of phtisiatry, of chemistry and pharmacy, of surgery.
LNMU provides admission for foreign citizens to the undergraduate education at Faculty of General Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry and Faculty of Pharmacy, also provides admission for Preparatory Course and Postgraduate Training. According to the License of Ministry of Education, Science, Youth and Sports of Ukraine АГ №582786 from 07.02.2012 the amount of foreign citizens for Undergraduate Education – 250 persons, for Preparatory Course – 100 persons, for Postgraduate training – 150 persons.
At 78 University departments, at the Institute of Clinical Pathology, in the Central Research Laboratory (CRL) and Laboratory of industrial toxicology are working 1211 scientists: 134 Doctor of Sciences and more than 620 PhD degree holders, including 113 full professors, 369 associate professors, 50 senior tutors, 662 assistant professors, 17 researchers. Among them there are 23 Members, 7 Corresponding Members of Academy of Sciences, 12 Honored Workers of Science and Technology, 
7 Honored Workers of Education, 19 Honored Doctors, 1 Honored Worker of Physical Culture and Sport, 
8 Laureates of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology.

Training of specialists in LNMU is provided at 6 Faculties: Medical Faculty #1 and #2, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Pharmacy (regular and correspondence education), Faculty of Postgraduate training, Faculty of Foreign Students – according to educational-qualificational level: specialist, master, and also in University Medical College according to educational-qualificational level – junior specialist.
The annual university amount of students is more than 19100 persons, which includes 5426 undergraduate students (including more than 1000 foreign students), 62 students of Preparatory Course, more than 1500 internship doctors, 50 students of Master's program, 70 students of PhD program, 70 Postgraduate doctors (Clinichna Ordynatura), around 11000 students of Faculty of Postgraduate training, 312 students of Medical College. Students of all Faculties study according to the credit-module system. 
In 2011 the first graduation of students, who studied according to the demands of "Bologna" process, took place.

Beginning from 1961 University provides education for foreign citizens. During 50 years over 2,5 thousand doctors and pharmacists - foreigners have got education here and have been working successfully as doctors and pharmacists in many countries of the world. Education is provided in Ukrainian, Russian Language, and since 1997 the teaching of foreign students in English has been launched and is rapidly developing. Now 70% of University foreign students study in English Medium Program.
University library contains more than 530000 volumes of textbooks, manuals and other relevant medical literature. Library has modern computer equipment. She has Internet connection and is connected with other scientific city libraries.
University in the Member of International and European Associations of Universities, and also is the member of almost 70 another international organizations, academies, federations. University is included into Directory of World Health Organization (WHO) and into Directory of Universities of Central European countries. In terms of University activities LNMU has the leading positions in ratings of higher educational institutions and higher medical educational institutions of Ukraine (Scopus 2010 – the 2nd place among medical universities and academies of Ukraine).
Clinical departments of University have the fund of more than 10000 beds (41 affiliated hospitals), 9 polyclinic departments with 3510 attendances during shift, University dental medical centre for more than 2000 attendances during shift.
University scientists closely cooperate with foreign colleagues in different spheres of medicine and pharmacy. Agreements of cooperation in the area of medical education and research were signed and are fulfilled between LNMU and Jagiellonian University Medical College (Krakow, Poland), Silesian Medical University (Katowice, Poland), Lublin Medical University (Poland), Poznan Medical University (Poland), Medical University in Warsaw (Poland), Wroclaw Medical University (Poland), Medical University in Gdansk (Poland), Medical University in Bialystok (Poland), Medical University in Sofia (Bulgaria).
University departments and laboratories participate in 12 scientific programs of Ukrainian Ministry of Health and international organizations. More that 50 research projects are carried out together with Ukrainian and foreign partners.

Over 2,500 unique preparations are collected in Anatomical Museum, as well as in the Museum of Human Diseases (which is included into register of national heritage) and in Museum of Forensic Medicine. The rare collection of medicinal and other useful plants of the University botanical garden, the collection of samples of medicinal plants of different climatic zones, the herbarium of Podillya and Carpathian region flora (3500 samples) is a good base for the research of students and teaching staff.
Today Danylo Halytsky Lviv National Medical University combines 6 faculties, medical college, 78 departments (including 48 clinical departments), 14 academic buildings, 41 affiliated hospitals, University dental medical centre for more than 2000 attendances during shift, teaching drugstore, botanical garden, CRL and Laboratory of industrial toxicology, Institute of clinical pathology, research centre for investigation of anticancer drugs, scientific library, 8 student hostels, sanatorium, student cafes and canteens, sports and health recovery camp "Medyk".
There are 40 amateur groups, clubs, workshops in University. Among them three amateur groups have the high degree of National. These National amateur groups are: folk dance ensemble "Horytsvit" (Adonis), folk choir "Muses of Hippocrates", folk ensemble "Medicus".
There are 23 sport-public and recreation and sports clubs in the University.

Academy has 7 faculties (first, second and third medical, stomatological, first and second international and postgraduate education faculties), where more than 4500 students and up to 1500 foreign citizens from 48 countries study.
697 teachers (among them 115 science doctors and 375 phylosophy doctors, 1 academician and 3 corresponding members of National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, 1 corresponding member of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine) help to master extremely difficult, responsible but infinitely grateful specialty at 7 faculties of medical academy (three faculties of general medicine, dentistry, two international and post-graduate studies faculties).
41 clinical departments were founded on the basis of 58 medical institutions. Generally, 29 specialized centers were created in clinical bases of the Academy.
Academy occupies 85 hectares area. It has 8 educational buildings with total area 52000 sq. meters, which includes 608 lecture rooms, classes and laboratories. Over 2849 students and doctors reside in 7 hostels with total area 46000 sq. meters. Academy has its own sports complex, sports camp, vivarium, scientific library, technological center and two museums.
Postgraduate training is carried out at the postgraduate education faculty by prominent scientists, high category doctors, that include 19 professors and 58 associate professors.
The post-graduate studies are carried out in three directions:
  • primary specialization of doctors-interns – internship;
  • advanced training and retraining;
  • professional training of specialists – clinical ordinatura.
For adult people Academy offers "Golden Age University" (GAU) – socially oriented establishment that provides health care training for geriatric patients with special needs, social mobilization recommendations.
GAU activity is guided by the current legislation, Academy Statute. Geriatric patients’ training is free of charge on the basis of SE "DMA" corporate sponsorship and an adult people voluntary consent. Modest budget of GAU is supported due to the local authorities, scientists, specialists, social, charitable and public establishments.
GAU staff is hook up with the trade unions, medical institutions, high educational establishments of the city, social and public organizations, having hands-on experience of medical care for geriatric patients.
Student scientific society of SE "DMA" covers more than 60 students’ societies with 1300 members. Students’ societies constantly provide new forms of education in this study groups, such as computer system for scientific research management of the students activity. As the result, annually up to 500 student reports are held at the conferences. Students from all departments of Academy are able to become participants of the academic, national and international conferences, to carry out scientific research and take invention activities.
Due to the support of SE "DMA" Dnipropetrovsk Charitable Foundation was created in 1994. Foundation is focused on the talented youth development and its purposes and tasks are:
  • increasing of an intellectual potential of medical sciences;
  • improvement of scientific culture;
  • carrying out new methodologies in the field of fundamental science and medical practice.
  • management of the system focused on talented youth search and selection; 
  • searching, improvement and support of innovative ideas;

  • preventive care clinic for 100 persons;
  • sports complex with game room, fencing, fitness room, table tennis, wrestling, swimming pool, a shooting gallery, a sports stadium with tennis court, sports and recreation outskirts’ camp for 250 persons;
  • complex of student canteens, cafes, buffets;
  • national history museum of SE "DMA"; 
  • fundamental museum of anatomy, etc.
The recent news from Academy activity, information about the achievements of scientists and other breaking news students and teachers can find in the local academy newspaper “Pulse” that is a tool for communication between academic staff and students.
Scientific activity of Academy is provided with modern methodological and technical bases. Current scientific activity involves 61 research projects. Priority directions are following:
  • development of new diagnostics technologies in order to prevent progression of arterial hypertension;
  • prenatal HIV-infection: evaluation efficiency and optimization modern pharmacological means of prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and prophylaxis of HIV/AIDS;
  • improvement of new methods of treatment and prevention the bladder and prostate cancer; modern methods of diagnostics and treatment of cerebrovascular pathology;
  • creation of national technologies for treatment of orthopedic diseases and musculoskeletal system traumas.
Academy scientists are active participants of international congresses, symposiums. For last 5 years 15 doctors and 167 candidates’ degree dissertations were defended by our scientists. Effectiveness of postgraduate study is 100%. 265 patents were received for inventions. Generally, 6507 articles were published, among them 516 in foreign journals. Academy has 3 academic journals - "Medical perspectives", "Urology", "Dermatovenerology, cosmetology, sexual pathology".
Scientific research is provided with:
  • library with foreign literature department, electronic catalog, computer software, information on specialized medical periodical publications. General Fund of the library covers over 600 000 volumes, which is annually replenished. The library completely provides students with educational literature.
  • patent administration department;
  • department of information with numerous periodic and refereed scientific literature;
  • standardization and metrology service;
  • central scientific laboratory with modern equipment and well-qualified specialists;
  • interdepartmental morphological, immunological and biochemical laboratories.
Since 1990 SE "DMA" carries out foreign students’ education. In 1995 the first 14 doctors – residents of other countries graduated from Academy. Generally, over 1000 foreign specialists from 45 countries of the world have been prepared in DMA.
Academy also offers advanced courses for foreign students from India, Japan, Denmark, France, USA, Holland, China, Spain, focused on the improvement of knowledge and skills at specified methods or areas in majoring specialty.
Financing of Academy consists of two sources: budget and non-budget. Non-budget sources of financing are the following:
  • teaching of the foreign and national students in Academy according to contracts;
  • educational, scientific & industrial complex;
  • scientific research ordered by enterprises;
  • voluntary contribution.
Significant expansion of economic activity forms allows Academy to strengthen the financial base and provide social and humanitarian programs.

KYIV Study Experience

The life of International students in Kyiv does not seem to have any difference from that in other parts of the world. Most of the student’s life in Kyiv is pretty much about studying & staying healthy which helps other foreign students to set themselves at the same environment. Mostly two types of students’ lives in Kyiv: Those who have grown up and live in the city and those who come to study from the foreign countries so there is built-in environment for the students to study here with full enjoyment and dedication. There are footballs, basketball and other sports clubs for students, where they will have the opportunity to get develop with physical strengths.
It is generally believed that students who come to stay in Kyiv have a more secure and comfortable life than other places of Ukraine. There are dormitory houses for students who do not have much of financial strength but it’s a fact of Kyiv that Two-thirds of all students from Kyiv University live in dorms and thus they do not meet the satisfactory yet unreasonable standards of living. Nonetheless, this gives students a way of living independently which provides them more freedom and a way to experience the life of being a student in different ways.
To find living places for students in Kyiv students can contact local rental-housing property owner which are available almost at every place in Kyiv. Although there is a student housing district for the students of Kyiv University, which is also home for the non-resident Kyiv State University’s students. This student housing compound is located on the outskirts of the city which is near away from Kyiv and can be reached with the help of public transportation.

  1. For the ease of students, University built a model dormitory building few years ago that encourage students to live inside the campus. This hotel-style dormitory is different from the present buildings of this University and is well appreciated among students.

Sumy State University is located in Sumy city in the North-East of Ukraine. Its history began in 1948. Today, SSU is a leading university of a classical type with the III-IV accreditation level in the region.

Currently, about 1,250 foreign students at SSU represent more than 50 countriesworldwide. The Preparatory Department at SSU offers Russian and Ukrainian language courses to help foreign students succeed. Moreover, such majors as Medicine, Computer Science and Management are taught in English.
Sumy State University cooperates with more than 200 partners from the USA, Great Britain, Germany, Austria, France, Belgium, Sweden, Poland, Lithuania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Japan, South Korea, China, the Russian Federation and other countries of the world.

Corresponding Members of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine, 120 Doctors of Sciences, Professors and 650 Candidates of Sciences (PhD), Associate Professors represent academic staff of the University. There are 45 postgraduate and post-doctoral programmes, degree awarding academic councils.
The Regional Center of Distance Learning operates at SSU with local centers in different regions of Ukraine.

Library

Advanced library information system contains over 3.1 million items both in hard copies and e-copies and provides access to the most famous electronic databases of the world. The University's library is a prize winner of All-Ukrainian contest "Library of the Year". SSU repository holds the 1st position in Ukraine according to the Ranking Web of Repositories by Webometrics.
Web of Science Core Collection database indexes the University’s scientific publications “Marketing and Management of Innovations” and “Journal of Nano- and Electronic Physics”. The last one is also indexed by the SCOPUS database.

Computer Labs and Information Technology

The university has a powerful computer and telecommunication system that consists of 2,500 computers, a computing cluster and about 90 computer labs.
Affiliated branch of UNESCO on information technologies, TOEFL-center, resource and educational centers of MICROSOFT, CISCO, PortaOne, DELCAM, NETCRACKER, 1С, SIEMENS, SAS, MindK and other companies operate at SSU.

Extracurricular activities

36 kinds of sports and 75 sports groups are available at the University. Sports teams perform at the premier league level. Over 60 students are the record breakers and prize winners of the Olympic Games, World and European Championships.
Three SSU students were part of Ukrainian national team in the XXX Summer Olympic Games in London; and six SSU students participated in the XXII Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. They were awarded with gold medals in biathlon relay race, and bronze medals in boxing and biathlon sprint.
At the ХХVІІ World Winter Universiade Dmytro Rusynov won gold in the individual race, silver in the mass start and bronze in the mixed relay as the part of Ukrainian national team. At the ХХVІІІ World Summer Universiade three SSU students as part of Ukrainian national team won silver in volleyball. Bohdan Yadov and Tetiana Levytska won bronze medals in judo. At 2015 European Games Artem Khomula won bronze in judo.
According to results of Student Games and the Championships of Ukraine, SSU is in the TOP-3 universities among higher education institutions, and it occupies the high position among all universities in Ukraine

General information
The main objective of the University is to provide higher medical education for Specialist’s, Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, as well as postgraduate training in internship, mastership, postgraduate study, residency and refresher courses for physicians and pharmacists.
There are 7 Faculties at the University (Medical Faculty No. 1, Medical Faculty No. 2, two Pharmaceutical Faculties (intramural and extramural), International Faculty No.1, International Faculty No.2, Faculty of Postgraduate Education), Medical College and University Clinic for 160 patients and 250 consultations at polyclinic.
The training at the University includes pre-university, undergraduate and postgraduate periods of study. Foreign students are trained at the International Faculty No.1 for further studies at higher educational institutions of Ukraine.
During their training at the University both Ukrainian and foreign students get higher education for the Specialist’s and Master’s degrees (“General Medicine”, “Pediatrics”, “Dentistry”, “Pharmacy”, “Technology of Perfume-Cosmetic Preparations”).
Postgraduate education includes training in internship, mastership and postgraduate study in 29 specialties, in doctoral candidacy – in 12 specialties, as well as refresher courses for physicians and pharmacists.
10200 students, postgraduates, interns, students of refresher courses, teachers-probationers, masters and clinical residents study at the University. There are more than 1800 foreign students from 42 countries at the University. 1024 students are taught in English. The University has gained authority and recognition by training foreign citizens from Asia, Africa, Latin Americaand Europe for more than 40 years. About 10500 specialists have got medical and pharmaceutical education and are working now in more than 100 countries of the world, taking up high positions in the public health systems of their countries.
At Zaporozhye State Medical University students acquire knowledge subject to the requirements of the European system of education. The academic curricula are based on the best models of native and foreign practice of specialists’ training.
Students, bachelors, interns, masters, postgraduates, teachers working for Doctor’s degree as well as students of refresher courses study at 59 departments. 56 departments are headed by Professors/Doctors of sciences, 3 departments are headed by Associate Professors/PhDs. The training is carried out with the use of the most modern scientific and pedagogical technologies.
There are 676lecturers at the University in 2014: 120 Professors and Doctors of Sciences, 444 Associate Professors and PhDs are engaged in scientific-pedagogic work. There are one Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, 46 members of International Academies of Sciences and International Scientific Societies, 8 Honorary Science and Engineering Workers of Ukraine, 1 Honorary worker of Higher School of Ukraine, 4 State Prize Winners, 5 Prize Winners of the Ukrainian Academy of Medical Sciences, 1 Prize Winner of National Academy of Sciences and Medical Academy of Sciences named after V.P. Komisarenko, 1 Prize Winner of the President of Ukraine, 2 Prize Winner of the Cabinet of Ministry of Ukraine, 3 Honorary Physicians of Ukraine among them.
The scientific schools of the University are well known outside Ukraine. Cardiological, surgery, pharmaceutical schools are among them. For the first time in Ukraine the specialists of Zaporozhye State Medical University have successfully performed the transplantations of heart. More than 500 transplantations of liver, kidney and pancreas have been performed. More than 20 preparations have been worked out by the scientists of the pharmaceutical school, produced and brought into medical practice in many countries abroad. The results of scientific work were reported at international forums in Sweden, Czech Republic, Spain, Holland, Brazil and Austria. The University has its own scientific editions: "Zaporozhye Medical Journal",  "Current issues in pharmacy and medicine:science and practice",  "Pathology".
There is a developed infrastructure of scientific units at the University including SRI (Scientific Research Institute ) of medical and ecological problems, Institute of clinical pathology of a man, SMA “Pharmatron”, central scientific research laboratory, certification-testing laboratory of perfume and cosmetic preparations and household products, department of doctoral candidacy and postgraduate study, editorial publishing department, Center of informatics and analytical support and testing, patent department, scientific research division, metrology service. Scientific Research Institute and laboratories are equipped with unique facilities for conducting fundamental and applied scientific researches.
There are Specialized Councils of Higher Attestation Commission for defense of Candidate and Doctor Degrees in different specialties. 30 theses for Doctor’s degree in 23 specialties and 143 theses for Candidate’s degree in 35 specialties were defended at the University during the last five years. 35 theses of Doctor’s degree and 137 theses for Candidate’s degree are being fulfilled ate the University according to the plan of preparation of scientific and pedagogical specialists. The University publishes periodic scientific and practical journals: “Zaporizhzhia medical journal”“Pathology““Current issues in pharmacy and medicine:science and practice“, 10-15 All-Ukrainian scientific-research and practical conferences with international participation are held annually.
The introduction of computer technologies into the teaching-studying process, scientific research and management is one of the priority-driven University's activities. 42 computer classrooms and 1300 PC provide students with academic curricula based on multimedia technologies and test control in the main disciplines. ZSMU has its own information Internet server. There is a centre of telemedicine and distance learning at the University which provides the participation in international scientific conferences held on the basis of videoconference technologies, organization and holding of scientific-methods videoconferences, organization of distance refresher courses for University teaching staff, using of distance technologies in training of students by correspondence.
Zaporozhye State Medical University is a participant of the International program Tempus. According to grant TEMPUS IV University fulfills the international program «Establishment of the Supra-Regional Network of the National Centers in Medical Education, focused on PBL and Virtual Patients», collaborates with a recognized language center Canadian College of English language (Vancouver, Canada) to improve the English language in online mode.ZSMU signed agreements on collaboration with Kirov State Medical Academy, West Kazakhstan Marat Ospanov State Medical University, Andijan State Medical Institute (Uzbekistan), Astana Medical University (Kazakhstan), Karaganda Medical University (Kazakhstan), Aristotle University in Thessaloniki (Greece), St. George University of London (Great Britain), Akaki Tsereteli State University (Georgia), David Tvildiany Medical University (Georgia), Wroclaw Medical University (Poland), Palacky University in Olomouc (Czech Republic), the University of Nicosia (Cyprus), I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University (Russia), Grodno State Medical University (Belarus), RīgaStradiņš University (Latvia),Pyatigorsk Pharmaceutical Institute (Russia), Plovdiv Medical University (Bulgaria), Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (Lithuania).
Zaporozhye State Medical University takes one of the first places in Ukraine in technical-material supply. The prestige of the University is formed by the availability of its own training facilities. Zaporozhye State Medical University is one of the few medical higher educational institutions in Ukraine that has its own training-scientific center “University Clinic” in which practical classes are conducted and medical aid is delivered. The University has the unique equipment: computer tomographs, devices for ultrasonic diagnosis, angiographic and endoscopic checkup, radioisotope diagnosis and many others to conduct fundamental and applied scientific investigations.
There is an electronic library and electronic catalogue in the scientific library of the University. The users have access to the electronic database of the library and can carry out a search from any computer connected with Internet and get full text-books.
Zaporozhye State Medical University looks like a student campus on the picturesque bank of the river Dnieper, the biggest river in Europe. It is a detached territory on which there are 5 academic buildings, 5 hostels, scientific and belletristic literature libraries with reading halls and computer rooms, medical centre, student's sanatorium-dispensary, several canteens and cafes, sports center, courts and stadium. There is an amateur art club for students who are keen on singing, dancing and playing musical instruments. Ukrainian historical and cultural parties, festivals of international friendship, competition parties are held at ZSMU.
All academic building, hostels, scientific library have access to Internet. There are Wi-Fi access points at the territory of the University. The student campus is under of the University security round-the-clock. The campus and hostels are equipped with the means of video surveillance and control.
