Sumy State University is located in Sumy city in the North-East of Ukraine. Its history began in 1948. Today, SSU is a leading university of a classical type with the III-IV accreditation level in the region.
The University currently serves more than 16,000 students who are pursuing pre bachelor, bachelor, specialist and master degrees in 45 majors and 21 fields of knowledge according to the list of majors 2015. About 1250 foreign students represent more than 50 countries worldwide.
From 2015 Sumy State University is included to the directory of world's best universities by the Times Higher Education World University Rankings.
Sumy State University enters the TOP-group (5 %) of leading universities of the world and is classified as university with high research intensity according to the international ranking of higher education institutions QS World University Rankings. SSU is in the TOP-100 according to the QS University Rankings: EECA among the universities of this region. According to the rankings SSU enters the TOP-5 Ukrainian universities.
According to the worldwide Internet rankings Webometrics and 4ICU, SSU takes the 3rdand 5th places respectively among Ukrainian universities. It also takes the a high position among the European ranking U-Multirank that identifies most indicators of academic, extracurricular, international and other activity of SSU as being higher than the world average value.
Sumy State University is the first Ukrainian higher education institution, which has passed in 2014 an independent external audit of the QS Company and was given the highest points (5 stars) in such categories as Teaching, Engagement, Access, and E-learning.
According to the results of Round University Ranking, completed by one of the largest information and analytical companies in the world Thomson Reuters, Sumy State University takes the 629th position among the world's universities and enters the TOP-3 best universities in Ukraine.
In accordance with University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP), evaluating the quality of academic performance of world’s universities, Sumy State University holds the 4th position among Ukrainian universities and is included to the TOP-10% universities worldwide.
According to SCImago Institutions Rankings Sumy State University takes the sixth place among Ukrainian universities and enters the TOP-200 universities of Central and Eastern Europe.
According to international ecological ranking UI GreenMetric 2015 Sumy State University enters the Top-250 universities in the world and occupies the second place among Ukrainian universities. SSU is the 1st Ukrainian university to enter this ecological ranking.
According to the nationwide ranking of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, SSU takes the 3rd place among “classical universities” of Ukraine.
According to the number of administrative agreements and grants, and the efficient use of budget funds Sumy State University has a leading position among classical universities and is in the TOP-10 universities of Ukraine.
Sumy State University belongs to the 7% of the best universities in the worldaccording to the results of quality evaluation of the world universities’ scientific activity based on the citation of scientists on Google Scholar by Webometrics.
SSU holds high positions in the ranking of Ukrainian universities “Osvita.ua” (educational leader in the northern region, the 8th position among all national universities and the 5th position among the classical universities of Ukraine). SSU also enters the TOP-3 Ukrainian universities based on the international activity indicators according to “Top-200 Ukraine”.
The University holds high positions among Ukrainian higher education institutions for the number of prize-winning places in All-Ukrainian competitions of students’ research works and All-Ukrainian Olympiads in educational disciplines, training areas and majors.
International Activity
Currently, about 1,250 foreign students at SSU represent more than 50 countriesworldwide. The Preparatory Department at SSU offers Russian and Ukrainian language courses to help foreign students succeed. Moreover, such majors as Medicine, Computer Science and Management are taught in English.
The University is a signatory of Magna Charta Universitatum and a reliable member of International Association of Universities, European University Association, Euroasian Universities Association, Association of Economic Universities of South and Eastern Europe and the Black See Region, IREG Observatory on Academic Ranking and Excellence, Institute of International Education Network and other international organizations.
Sumy State University cooperates with more than 200 partners from the USA, Great Britain, Germany, Austria, France, Belgium, Sweden, Poland, Lithuania, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Japan, South Korea, China, the Russian Federation and other countries of the world.
SSU is a reliable partner for joint projects in frames of international grant programmes ofEU (Tempus, Erasmus Mundus, Jean Monett, Erasmus+, Horizon 2020), United Nation Development Programme, British Council, the World Bank, bilateral scientific and research projects, grants of private foundations. The University accomplishes about 150grants annually. For the last 5 years the amount of research work in frames of international grant projects has increased in about 20 times.
The University actively develops academic mobility programmes, including long-term and short-term studying, internships and placement programmes for undergraduate and postgraduate students, research and teaching staff, as well as administrative staff using technologies of credit transfer and recognition of academic results. The most popular programmes are Erasmus Mundus, DAAD, and Fulbright.
Research Activity
According to the SCOPUS database, Sumy State University holds a leading positionamong Ukrainian universities for h-index (the index of research impact) and the number of citations by international scholarly community.
Corresponding Members of the National Academy of Science of Ukraine, 120 Doctors of Sciences, Professors and 650 Candidates of Sciences (PhD), Associate Professors represent academic staff of the University. There are 45 postgraduate and post-doctoral programmes, degree awarding academic councils.
The Regional Center of Distance Learning operates at SSU with local centers in different regions of Ukraine.
Library
Advanced library information system contains over 3.1 million items both in hard copies and e-copies and provides access to the most famous electronic databases of the world. The University's library is a prize winner of All-Ukrainian contest "Library of the Year". SSU repository holds the 1st position in Ukraine according to the Ranking Web of Repositories by Webometrics.
Web of Science Core Collection database indexes the University’s scientific publications “Marketing and Management of Innovations” and “Journal of Nano- and Electronic Physics”. The last one is also indexed by the SCOPUS database.
Computer Labs and Information Technology
The university has a powerful computer and telecommunication system that consists of 2,500 computers, a computing cluster and about 90 computer labs.
Affiliated branch of UNESCO on information technologies, TOEFL-center, resource and educational centers of MICROSOFT, CISCO, PortaOne, DELCAM, NETCRACKER, 1С, SIEMENS, SAS, MindK and other companies operate at SSU.
Extracurricular activities
36 kinds of sports and 75 sports groups are available at the University. Sports teams perform at the premier league level. Over 60 students are the record breakers and prize winners of the Olympic Games, World and European Championships.
Three SSU students were part of Ukrainian national team in the XXX Summer Olympic Games in London; and six SSU students participated in the XXII Winter Olympic Games in Sochi. They were awarded with gold medals in biathlon relay race, and bronze medals in boxing and biathlon sprint.
At the ХХVІІ World Winter Universiade Dmytro Rusynov won gold in the individual race, silver in the mass start and bronze in the mixed relay as the part of Ukrainian national team. At the ХХVІІІ World Summer Universiade three SSU students as part of Ukrainian national team won silver in volleyball. Bohdan Yadov and Tetiana Levytska won bronze medals in judo. At 2015 European Games Artem Khomula won bronze in judo.
According to results of Student Games and the Championships of Ukraine, SSU is in the TOP-3 universities among higher education institutions, and it occupies the high position among all universities in Ukraine
